The Lessons I've Learned
You can never go home again.
But this may not necessarily be a bad thing. When I left for college, part of me expected my home life to remain exactly the same, so that when I returned home over breaks life would just pick up where it left off. But when I returned home this was not so. The people in my hometown continued to move on just as I had. It was a little selfish of me to expect the world to end since I had left, and in the end, I think I feel better that it hadn't.
Perspectives on the same event can range miles apart
It was once said that history is only the winners version of the truth. In looking at the world around me it seems like everything is in shades of gray. Hanging out with multiple people (at the same event) you can see that the same event can look totally different from everyone else's view. So never accapt one side of the story, always try to look at everything and figure out what makes sense.
I can not control the way other people think
People's thoughts are their own, and there are times when I don't agree with what they think, but I should allow their thoughts to be their own. Hee Hee, but sometimes giving my side of the story doesn't hurt. =)
The value of a good friend
This is such a BIG IMPORTANT ONE! Sometimes you just need to get a text message, or a quick IM, or a phone call from someone to totally brighten your day. Even if the news isn't really that good, its just nice to hear his/her voice. Or sometimes you just need someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, or an sympathic soul. I love all my friends so much, because they are the ones who made me who I am today.
The only person who I should expect to take care of me is myself
I'm old enough now that I shouldn't have to depend on my parents for everything in my life. Nor should I have to depend on my brothers or other family members. I know that I can always go to them for help, but the person who will always be stuck with me is me.
Though I am a busy person, I have no one to blame but myself for losing contact with friends
That's just my bad. Its odd that sometimes I am scared of calling people whose numbers I used to have completely memorized. But as life changed for me, so did it for them, and I worry that we might no longer be compatible. But sometimes it works out for the best (like Hudson's b-day party last year which was a blast). So beware, the random phone calls may begin soon.
Once I discover who I am, I must try not to be afraid of it
I am terrified of failure, and so even though I know what I really like to do and really want to make a career of doing it, I'm so scared I'm going to fail. But I guess it's better to try and fail than to live a life of regret. But then again, its always better to try and succeed.
The value of a good education, and an open mind
As much as it was hard for me to drag myself out of bed in the morning, to slop through a rainy Davis morning to catch a crowded bus to sit in class, wet, cold and miserable, I have learned that the education I have really always me to see the world in a broader scale. By no means is my education complete, for I still have alot to learn, but I am glad to have such a broad base of knowledge and experience to draw from. Also, that edcuation would not be worth anything without an open mind to learn more and look through other persectives. ( I mean, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to read The DaVinci Code while on a religious pilgrimage through Europe, but it was very educational and eye-opening to see two differing views at the same time.)
To listen to that little voice inside of me
Why? because it's usually right.
Sometimes, sadly, the need to face reality and see the bad in people too
I tend to get my heart ripped out and stomped on, usually several times by the same person. I guess its time to maybe just give up on people. but, i just don't want to.
